Hello, I’m Leo. I began my study in TEFL in last October.
I graduated from the college in 2005, at the same time, my English studying discontinued, and it had lasted for five years. Although I insisted on reading intermittently after I finished my work in the evening, I had forgotten most of knowledge that I had learned in college. As it is known, English study in Chinese College always focuses on grammar, the students pay more attention to getting a high score, we are careless of speaking, and in consequence, we were dumb as soon as we need talk in English. I have a dream that I can speak English fluently and idiomatically, and I hope that I would make my dream come true in the near future. That is why I want to practice my spoken English in TEFL.
I can’t find a word to describe my feeling at that time, when I walked into TEFL Huanglong centre at the first time, being showed the way by CC Doreen. Maybe that was excited, nervous………
As soon as I arrived here, I got a message: Everyone in TEFL must speak English. I became nervous, because my English was so poor that I wasn’t able to communicate with the others freely. I was afraid I would make a lot of mistakes. Maybe I would be laughed at. That would be very embarrassing.
My study in TEFL was terrible at the beginning because I was unconfident of my English, so I often made excuses for my absence. As a result, I had just stayed in TEFL for several hours totally per week. Even if I was there, I always sat in front of a computer, pretending to do my courseware. At that moment, I was worried about “hello” behind me. I was scared to talk with anyone. Sometimes my tutor gave me a “Hi”, my face turned red immediately, I was so afraid that I want to stay in private. I wish the talk would finish as fast as possible.
But I also try my best to change it later. In a class given by a foreign teacher, I paid special attention to listen to what he said. I was very happy to distinguish some words among his talk. After that class, as soon as I speak in Chinese, I had a special feeling which I never had before. It was just like to shift between two different worlds, it was amazing.
Teacher or tutor always asked the same question: “Do you understand it?” when they noticed a clueless look on my face. “It’s ok…”would always be my answer. Actually, I was just scared to interrupt his or her talking. In fact, I had some question left.
I had been bothered by this kind of situation for a long time until that day that class. This was a class given by Luna, she was a Chinese teacher. She found this secret, smiled and said: “Leo, if you don’t understand what I said, maybe you can say slowly down.” At once, I immediately realized that I can make mistakes, I need not to worry about it. At that moment, I thought a new period was coming.
Some pressures before disappeared. I found my own way to learn English. In my opinion, language is a tool for the communication. As it is, the studying had better be carried out among many people. So I should talk more with more people than before and try my best to create more chances to speak English. I began to make friends with more classmates forwardly.
I think it is very useful to know the difference between synonyms, after that , I can use a lot of words and phrase correctly, and it is helpful to remember more words. So I often focus on some words. Sometimes my tutors talk with me, creating a chance to use the words. But some classmates thought I was so strange that they always laughed at me, especially the guy. One day, in a talk bar, there were so many students attending the class, some of them were newcomers, the foreign teacher asked us to introduce ourselves one by one. One student came from Hangzhou, she was the local. But I made a mistake on the meaning of this word. I took “local” for “aborigine”, one student found the mistake, he laughed and cried, it was such a very loud, high-pitched noise that everybody noticed what happened, all of the people joked with me. I was too ashamed to hide my embarrassment. But now when I recall this experience, I can't help but smile. It was so interesting.
The life and studying in TEFL will be continuing. I like staying here. How lovely the classmates are! How respected the teachers and tutors are! How quickly time flies!
在这篇文章中,Leo介绍了他在TEFL学习的经历,提出了他对于英语学习的一些建议。同时在文中也提到了他与其他学员的在TEFL所建立的友谊。这是很令人高兴的。
In this article, Leo introduces his experience here, and also gives his suggestions for the English Learning. What’s more, he mentions the friendship in TEFL. This speech was delivered several days before one of his classmates’ trip to the UK. So it is also a moving speech!
